If you are in the Yorkshire Dales, visit Outhwaites Ltd Ropemakers in Hawes. There is a great deal of information on their website, including Ropeworks History and their Visitor's Centre is open Monday to Friday all year round except Christmas and Good Friday. It is well worth a visit.
