I'm talking pre-1911.
You don't need a subscription to search at Findmypast, you only need a subscription to view transcripts and images. And £79.99 for the Starter subscription is an awful lot of money - I wouldn't advise any LostCousins member to buy a Starter subscription.
That's a fallacy - it has nothing to do with exchange rates, but I wouldn't expect the press to understand that. If you've spent thousands of dollars travelling to the other side of world then (a) you're probably more affluent than most, and (b) if you were prepared to spend that much money on a holiday your budget for holiday expenditure is likely to be higher.
Japanese tourists are amongst the biggest spenders, but there are 77 yen to each NZ dollar.
Who said the press said that? it could have been somebody from the tourism industry for all you know, I was merely citing an example of why people hesitate to spend.
I honestly don't care how many yen there are to the dollar, the fact is that Japanese tourists numbers have gone down as this table shows. Way back in the late 1980's, early 1990's Japanese were coming here to get married and were only here for short periods, obviously they spent up large then. Please don't argue with that, my daughter was working in inbound Japanese tourism at that time and I know because she used to tell me about it.
I don't know if you have travelled extensively but we, like the average joe blow Kiwi, look for the cheapest flights. We do not take part in expensive activities as we travel to see people and places.
Not all tourists are affluent. that's a fallacy.
