Every "disaster" is tragic whether it takes one life or many but I found this list fascinating for putting some perspective to the magnitude and date of the major ones. Since this link is to a Wikipedia site, a word of warning , you may end up two hours later still reading through the sub-links.
 
Amazing, couldn't believe how many shipwrecks there were.
