I am lucky enough to live in the Langdon Hills plotlands. My house history shows the plot being purchased in 1922 for the princely sum of £40. Although most of the houses have now been rebuilt over time there are one or two in the area that are obviously from the plotlands era and although we do now have electric and water, there is no gas or mains drainage.
Many of the uninhabited properties were reclaimed during the war to allow the land to be used for food production by the Land Army girls and as Andy says in his article, many more were compulsory purchased to create Basildon New Town.
