How You can Help Yourself to Taste Success!

Hi Everyone!

Here's a weekly update on how well people have been doing over at LostCousins.
  • 60 new members joined the LostCousins site
  • 10,354 new entries have been added and
  • 472 relatives have been matched.
Well Peter, as you can see, I DO have some good news for you and all of us for this week!

Over 10,000 new entries this week! And I suspect that this will continue for a couple of weeks as those 24,000 people start to enter their ancestors. Sounds like you need to send them a thank you email!! :)

Obviously 10k entries from 24k people isn't a very high ratio, but it's a start, can you work out how many of the 24k have responded?

So well done everybody, and maybe now we'll see some more new faces on the forum in the coming weeks?

p.s. In the time it's taken me to write this post, 40 new entries have been added to Lost Cousins!

Great news, RD - and of course, this is a good time for those who have Twitter accounts to invite other researchers to join, since with both LostCousins and Ancestry free this weekend it's a perfect opportunity to find 'lost cousins'! (Of course, you can also use your My Referrals page to invite individual friends and, especially, relatives.)

  • 12,904 new entries have been added and
  • 594 relatives have been matched.
Well Peter, as you can see, I DO have some MORE good news for you and all of us for this week!

12,904 new entries this week! Lets hope it continues for all of September!

All the numbers are up this week compared with last week, and last week was a very impressive week in it's own right.

  • 26 new members joined the LostCousins site
  • 6,617 new entries have been added and
  • 263 relatives have been matched.
Although the numbers are down on last week, they are still very encouraging, with just under 30k new entries in the last 3 weeks.

And my match potential went up this week, without me having to enter any new relatives, just as Peter said it would.

New members are up, and new entries are still strong. Peter has just sent an email about members who have "unknown" as a relationship, so this could have affected some of the figures.

Yes I had an unknown. She's still in truth unknown as it was an odd set of discoveries. I can dream up a scenario to explain it all, and have changed her to "by marriage" as this fits the scenario. Whether or not reality matches the scenario is probably lost in history.
 
Yes, I also have similar scenarios. But I think the email was a good prompt for us to go check whether a relationship had now been discovered.

When you add data to LC, you don't automatically go back and check what you've added when you discover more info and add it to your tree.
 
Yes I had 3 "unknowns" who were only added recently. Peter suggested my family member, who was a lodger in a household of whom I knew nothing, may have married one of the daughters and sure enough he was correct, thanks Peter, now my unknowns are "by marriage" :)
 
I likewise had some unknowns, all in the 1841 census and all entered ages ago. Unfortunately I am not really any the wiser about these people than I was then! One I knew was a servant and am pretty sure completely unrelated to me but the others are all still unknown. I strongly suspect one of them is a sister of my ancestor (he being the head of that household) but I have so far been unable to either prove or disprove this so she's now down as a possible relative. The other two may be relatives but any relationship would be more distant and as they were also in employment with the family, that's how I've listed them for now.

I did previously think one of the latter two might have been brother of a future wife of an ancestor's sibling but with this further look into things I was able to rule that out - they just happened to share a surname and place of birth.
 
I can claim some responsibility for some of the new entries over the past month as I've started to add some of my in-law Canadian connections but sadly no new cousins. A reminder that if you think a brother/sister of one of your closer cousins might have been in Canada at the time of the 1881 census the free version (Peter's link) from Family Search is excellent. What I've also found is that some families who presumably originally migrated to the US had made their way north to Canada by 1881.
 
I had an embarrassing number of unknowns. Quite a few have now been upgraded to show the proper relationship (marriage or blood) , but a lot were really 'possibly related' who have actually proved to be NOT related, and have been deleted.

  • 71 new members joined the LostCousins site
  • 5,520 new entries have been added and
  • 290 relatives have been matched.
All numbers are up again this week, which is always great news! The average ratio of entries added to relatives matched is below 20, which means that there was a potential match for every 20th person entered.

A year ago these were the figures
  • 46 new members joined the LostCousins site
  • 5,106 new entries have been added and
  • 231 relatives have been matched.
It will be interesting to see if we have a seasonal trend :)

I think everyone who has read my latest newsletter has been dreaming of Genealogy in the Sunshine rather than entering their ancestors (sorry about that, RD). In 2015 we're going to have our first attendees from Australia, and there are even more coming from Canada and the USA than we had this year.

Anyone who is interested should let me know right away - and then get back to entering those pesky ancestors!
