Excise Officers

Does anyone know how excise officers were appointed in Scotland around 1800?
My 3rd great grandfather Andrew Sproule was an excise officer in Portpatrick, Wigtonshire, in the early 1800s. The first Urquhart Census (1832-4) indicates that he was born outside Wigtonshire, but had been there for 23 years (he was married in Portpatrick in 1811); so he may have moved there to take up his duties. (I have not been able so far to discover where he was born.)
Yet Robert Burns seems to have performed his in his native Ayrshire - though with how much zeal, one can only wonder!
 
Have you tried the National Records of Scotland site ? It gives some information. They may be able to help you further.

Or Liverpool Museums. They seem to have some excise history.

I looked into this subject to find my 3xg grandfather. He had been working in Yorkshire but then I found in a newspaper he had been transferred to Scotland.

You may already have tried these. Good luck
