Not sure why they would say that. I've used Firefox almost exclusively with no problems on Ancestry. EmmyW - you will probably have two sets of JPGs on your system somewhere. The download location is probably set differently in Firefox and IE.

Thank you - I am sure you are right - I found them listed in 'History', but they would not open, and I couldn't find them anywhere else. I have no problem using both IE and Firefox - just choosing the best one for the job I am doing at the time.

I recently downloaded in excess of 500 jpegs from Ancestry while they had free access to the UK Wills site. Went to have a look for them and found I couldn't find them anywhere although they were in the 'history'. That was using firefox. Repeated the exercise the next day using IE - no problems!!

When you say "downloaded" what do you mean? Do you mean you actively clicked save image and saved it to your local machine? Or do you mean you viewed them and the browser did something to save them? If you downloaded them do you recall what filenames you gave them? You could perhaps search your machine for them as it may be that its simply your machine doesn't understand they are JPG files.

History in any browser will only store the URL of the page you visited clicking on it simply visits the site again, so if the permissions have changed in the meantime eg: free offer has ended then the link to the page will probably deny you access.

I routinely use Chrome and can't recall having problems at Ancestry or any other website for that matter (other than problems that were repeated when I switched to different browsers).

I always save downloaded images in the relevant folder on my computer, rather than relying on the copy in the Downloads folder. It's also an opportunity to alter the brightness and contrast, trim off borders, and rename the files.

As Peter hints at you possibly rely on Internet Explorer deciding where to save your files rather than choosing where to save them. If that's the case they are likely to be in your downloads folder.

I hear what you are saying, but because of the limited time free offer, I had time constraints, so I moved most of the files from the Downloads folder later, after I had used them, and renamed them. Cropping over 500 jpegs just didn't occur to me.

Thanks for that. I am currently using an old laptop (noisy fan) with Vista (remember that one).

I normally just view my downloads in my Downloads file, so I am not on the internet, but I tried using control J, and all the downloads were still listed, and I could still view the ones which I had not moved into other folders.

Although I never intended for my support of the new IE 10 for Windows 7 to denigrate either Firefox or Chrome (or even Opera although I have no experience with it), it is amazing how quickly we rush to defend our favourites.

My own and much used favourite remains Firefox which until the upgrade of IE was my browser of choice. But even that is not strictly true because – and here I do not boast merely tell things as they are – with 2 monitors on both my PC’s (Vista & Windows 7) I open Ancestry in Firefox and Tribal pages in Chrome as Home pages and view other sites in separate tabs.

On my Windows 7 PC –prior to the IE improvement – I had Firefox set to FMP with other genealogical sites assigned to other tabs and Chrome as a Google browsing facility at which it excelled. That is until I had a major problem with Chrome which I will touch on in a moment, but because I had to remove Chrome I was happy to find that IE became a natural substitute, and has now become a favourite.

My problem with Chrome came with an upgrade which thereafter caused Chrome to be invaded with an ‘Advert’ Trojan and I could not get rid of it despite several uninstalls and reinstalls. It took over as a search engine (side swiping Google) and then up came numerous sub-screens extolling the virtues of this or that product. Online I discovered others sharing the same fate (it had its own Trojan name and was mainly invasive) and followed ‘geek’ advice to remove it with limited success. In the end I took it off completely and used a proprietary program to remove all traces from the registry.

I have to say that in all this time Chrome continued to run successfully on my Vista PC (and my wife’s laptop). And, as all this is over 6 months old, I can record that I have since tentatively reinstalled it on my Windows 7 PC –ensuring from Google.com - where it, so far, remains Trojan free. Even so IE is now my browser of choice with Firefox as my preferred second browser.

Sorry I've been quiet for the last week - I have had (and may still have) major computer problems. I took it to a repair man today and it worked for him - so it's an intermittent fault - how we love them. In the meantime I was using my 12 year old desktop that I'd kept for such an occasion - makes a laptop sound almost silent - running Win98 - remember that!!! I couldn't download a browser that works with this forum - I tried FFox and IE5- IE6 wouldn't install. I wondered about Opera but it looked a bit complicated. In the end, I got the laptop back - and Chrome has spent half an hour updating itself wrecking performance of everything else.

So back to WinXP now
