Ah my confusion was that the July newsletter also had AI analysis. It's a bit of a annoyance with IT professionals that everyone goes on about ChatGPT when it's probably the least capable LLM AI tools out there, challenged only by Microsoft CoPilot in how bad it is. Note ALL LLM AI models will potentially summarise and leave things out, the degree to which they do is very strongly influenced by how much you prompt it to be diligent.
Perhaps a quick getting started guide:
Visit
the Gemini page and login (this requires a free google account which many people will already have especially if they use Chrome and are signed into Chrome so their bookmarks are shared across devices.
Once logged in start by giving Gemini some context of how you want to interact with it. eg:
"Please remember this context for all future conversations. I am retired with a keen interest in family history and in X, Y and Z. I live in Anytown, My County, UK so have a particular interest in local references and I prefer clear less technical answers with links to relevant articles so I can read up on the background in my own. Please take time to check your sources of all information ideally by finding at least two sources for anything you report back to me. Please try to avoid "reading between the lines" and guessing, if you are unsure or have been unable to find reliable sources, then tell me you are unsure. I'd rather be told you cannot find proof than be given inaccurate information. The tone of our converstaions should be coffee table chat, rather than corporate style, or too formal."
Then start a conversation.
Now hopefully that initial context gives you a flavour of how you can "set the scene" for all future interactions. Obviously you can tweak that to your own preferences, eg: you may prefer a more cold solid fact based discussion without the "coffee table chat" vibe, or you prefer some other style. A friend of mine has his talk in a local dialect, if you instruct it to remmeber to do something it will adapt the style of reply to suit. Note it is defintitely NOT too late to give it context if you are already using Gemini. The key is asking it to remember something for later (which is why you need to be logged in). The more you set the scene and carve out a mode of interaction that doesnt annoy you the better the results you will get. Plus if the answers you get don't sit right, then tell it. "Actually I'd prefer you to be less chatty and more professional."
The key thing is because you are logged in it will remember these directions and use them for all future chats.
So for instance for a first "google search" conversation instead of the old fashioned key word search you have done in the past "Lost Cousins history". Try the conversational "Tell me about the history of Lost Cousins and the key features of what makes it stand out as a unique family history website." It will come back with answers read them and then question it on what it replied, ask it for links for further reading or follow the links already provided.
The key is ENGAGE IN CONVERSTATION not just old fashioned keyword searching. You'll likely be shocked at just how useful, AND accurate this new method of searching is.
