It should find census refs like the one you quoted. Can you export the individual that has the census and I can check.
BTW you don't have the latest Mac version, it is on the App Store it is v1.1.0 (Build 33) and has big changes since v1.0.6 Build 19. In particular it adds printing and exporting to Excel/Numbers, plus sortable columns and a lot of little tidyups. There is also a newer Mac Build on the website which is v1.1.0 build 36 (although barring a couple of minor tweaks it's identical to the App Store version).
This is what my Mac version of FTA gives for my GEDcom:
Found 0 census facts in GEDcom file (0 good, 0 usable).
But three lines down it says:
Found 18677 Residence facts in GEDcom file (17267 treated as Census facts) 3 warnings (data tolerated).
Ancestry saves census information as Residence information, so does FTM if synced.
Thanks, I thought it was just me when I tried it earlier, but I see the searches are now working again on FMP (so the grey arrows now work too)WARNING: Findmypast searches aren't working at the moment - it's a problem on their site, but will mean that the grey arrows don't work for some censuses.
OK I think I know what the issue is. In Options under Census check if the option to skip Census Reference checking is enabled or disabled. I strongly suspect it is skipping census reference checking. Thanks for the link to the latest Mac version. Actually I do have v1.1.1 (build 38) but for some reason used a previous version (which I've now deleted to avoid confusion!) Anyway, whichever version I use I still get the same '0 census references' message as before. Attached the GEDCOM exported from FTM for just that one individual whose 1881 census ref I quoted above.
Do you need to use an ID number as reference? Won't the census ref, names and age (or year of birth) be enough to make a unique record?Mostly it will. Beta 15 can now read a user's my ancestor page and check to see if the person is already there before the update process works. It checks the exact census reference plus name (using fuzzy matching if required) and birth year (within 1 year tolerance). If it finds a match is records a Lost Cousins fact for that person and logs that in the users' FTAnalyzer database file so that next time the GEDCOM is loaded it will auto add back in that Lost Cousins fact. This should all just work as long as the users' software doesn't change the ID numbers for the individuals.

No not really the problem with names & dates of birth is that they can change for the same person. eg: you will have loads of records where at one time the date of birth was imprecise eg: ABT 1875 and subsequently has become more precise or exact eg: 7 AUG 1875. That means that person's record would have changed.Do you need to use an ID number as reference? Won't the census ref, names and age (or year of birth) be enough to make a unique record?
It is indeed incomplete. Here is an example of an entry from my tree:Peter can you advise how a 1881 Canadian census with a pattern of "C_13266; Page 67; Family 301" becomes an enterable Census ref. I'm assuming at present that this is an incomplete census reference?
Beta 16 now available. Barring any show stopping bugs I'm going to release this as v7.3.0 so consider it v7.3.0-ReleaseCandidate-1
They'll still need to have the right census information in their trees, won't they? Or can FTA carry out a census search and pull in the information from FMP or Ancestry?Peter, you must be so happy when this goes live, people won't be able to complain about how long it takes to enter their relatives now.
One thought - although manually adding additional household members after the first is a pretty trivial task, I know there are quite a few members who, to save time, have only entered one or two members of a household. Is there any way of automatically pulling in the census data for the other members of the household who are in the user's tree, then updating their My Ancestors page automatically?
For the most important censuses (1880/81) we use the information in the transcription anyway. Perhaps this feature could be introduced for those censuses only? That might be very helpful but I would prefer that FTA lists the individuals found as potential updates and then to allow the user to modify/correct any information before requesting the update be made, rather than have everything fully automatic and require later correction if appropriate, such as when transcription is wrong.
