The midwife made a mistake?

I came across an interesting entry in the parish register for Kencot, Oxfordshire in 1714, as follows:

Elizabeth the Son (mistaken by the Midwife for a Daughter) of Philip & Christian Turner was Baptized the 16th & buryed the 18th of July

So, did the midwife really make a mistake or was this a case of a child born with ambiguous gender? And who had the final say?
