When I first started family history I got very interested when I found an ancestor's birth place showed on a census as FRANCE. It wasn't until I dug further I found France is a hamlet in Dorset. The census I had been looking at was taken when she lived many miles away and the enumerator like me had obviously never heard of the place either so just put France down thinking of the country and not asking/recording the county. On other censuses it was recorded correctly. I lesson learned about not assuming you know where somewhere is located.
